Kathmandu (dpa) - Transport, markets and schools in Nepal were closed Sunday by a general strike called by indigenous nationalities, and some journalists were attacked.
A group representing ethnic minorities called the three-day nationwide shutdown to demand identity-based federalism. They are also protesting a government decision Friday to grant indigenous status to the Brahmin and Chhettri castes.
Press vehicles and journalists were targeted by strike enforcers Saturday, as cars were vandalized and reporters manhandled on the streets.
Some tourist vehicles and ambulances were also targeted. Police arrested more than 30 people for enforcing the strike.
Different ethnic groups have been striking around the country for past several weeks, demanding the inclusion of their rights in the new constitution.
The charter is scheduled to be written by May 27. The drafting has been delayed several years due to bickering between political parties.
