Kathmandu (dpa) - A Nepalese farmer bit a cobra to death as the venomous snake attempted a getaway after biting him, a newspaper reported Thursday.
"It made me angry after the snake bit me," said Mohammed Salmo Miya, 55, of Morang district, 130 kilometres south-east of the capital, Kathmandu.
"So, I followed it and bit it several times to kill it," the Annapurna Post daily quoted him as saying. He said it took 15 minutes to kill the cobra.
Miya said he could have just struck the snake a few times to kill it, but was so angry that he decided to bite it instead. He had heard that biting a snake back reduced the effect of the venom.
The snake bit him on his right leg, while he was working in the field.
Villagers thronged to see Miya, and the snake he killed. An assistant at the village health post, which Miya visited after the incident, said the farmer was healthy.
The Tarai region in the south has a wide variety of snakes. Every year, 20,000 cases of snake bites are reported in the country, mainly in the southern belt, killing hundreds.
