Kathmandu (dpa) - A United States development agency said Tuesday that it had awarded a 30-million-dollar grant to Nepal to fight climate change.
The grant from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is to fund a five-year programme of restoring forests and other natural ecosystems.
The programme was dubbed Hariyo Ban - or green forest in Nepali.
A key Hariyo Ban investment is a carbon sequestration project, USAID said in a press release.
The grant will cover the east-west Terai region and the Chitwan-Annapurna region.
"The government of Nepal welcomes the efforts being made by Hariyo Ban," said Deependra Bahadur Kshetry, vice chairman of the country's national planning commission, during a launch event.
Nepal faces numerous environmental threats. Most perilous is the Himalayan glacier retreat. Melting glaciers and lake outbursts have also flooded communities downstream.
Nearly 1.9 million Nepalese are effected by such floods and by other climate change incidents.
In the coming years, 10 million more people could see their livelihoods impacted by climate change.
The USAID program has local and international partners, such as the World Wildlife Fund.
