Kathmandu (dpa) – Two people died and 12 others were missing in Nepal after an overcrowded boat capsized in the south-east of the country, police said Wednesday.
The boat overturned Tuesday in the Kamala River, in the district of Dhanusa.
Rescue operations were made difficult by the high water levels, due to monsoon rain. Two bodies had been recovered and 16 people were rescued. The police said the chances of finding anyone else alive were slim.
“We still cannot say exactly how many people went missing or have died, as there was no ticket system to get on the boat,” police officer Hari Bahadur Pal told the German Press Agency dpa.
“We've asked the Indian police to inform us if they find any bodies that might be carried downstream to India.”
The vessel was believed to have been carrying at least 30 people.
