Nepal‘s earth-walled city to become World Heritage Site

Kathmandu (dpa) - An ancient mud city in northern Nepal was a formality away from inclusion on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, media reports said Thursday.

The 15th-century palace and surrounding buildings in Lo Manthang, Mustang district, were recognized as rare and valuable examples of earth-walled architecture by the World Heritage Committee in Paris
last week, the Kantipur newspaper reported.

A few formalities were required from Kathmandu to make the listing official, Bishnuraj Karki, head of Nepal‘s Department of Archaeology, was quoted as saying.

Kathmandu submitted Lo Monthang for consideration in 2008.
